Aim

The Master of Theology programme is designed to prepare future theological teachers of the Church.

Full specialization in a particular discipline is not provided, but candidates may choose one of the following branches as their major field of study:

  • Old Testament
  • New Testament
  • Systematic Theology
  • Church History
  • Pastoral Theology
  • Pastoral Theology and HIV/AIDS new
  • Missiology

Duration of the Programme    top

Completion of programme requirements will normally take two years (four semesters). The last semester is reserved for research and writing the thesis. Each semester consists of 17 weeks of teaching and one week of examinations. The academic year begins in August and ends in May.

Admission to the Programme    top

  • Academic qualifications of the applicant. To qualify for admission to the M.Th. degree programme, applicants must possess the following qualifications:
    • A basic theological degree, such as a B.D. or M.Div. or their equivalent, from a recognized institution;
    • An overall "B+" average;
    • Proof of having taken and passed at least one biblical language during undergraduate studies;
    • Proficiency in English at a level which will allow reading, writing, and basic research;
    • Biblical Studies applicants only: Proficiency in Biblical languages. Old Testament applicants must have produced a 70% average over the whole duration of the course in Hebrew. New Testament applicants must have produced a 70% average over the whole duration of the course in Greek. Those who do not meet these standards may meet the language requirement by taking a qualifying exam set in June, or by taking and passing the language courses offered at the college.

  • Material to be submitted by Applicants
    • Curriculum Vitae (CV);
    • An essay of about two pages indicating why undertaking graduate work at MUCo is desired;
    • Certified transcript of former academic records;
    • An endorsement from church leader (except for private candidates);
    • A properly filled out application form, reaching MUCo on or before May 31 for the course beginning in August of the same year;
    • Medical and health forms, provided by MUCo and filled out by a qualified physician after a thorough physical examination;
    • Letter from a sponsor indicating that study costs for two years will be covered.

  • Residence Permit: Non-Tanzanians must apply for and obtain a Residence Permit. The application form may be downloaded here.

Programme Requirements    top

  • Major. Applicants must choose a major in on of the following disciplines:
    • Old Testament
    • New Testament
    • Systematic Theology
    • Church History
    • Pastoral Theology
    • Pastoral Theology and HIV/AIDS
    • Missiology
  • Period of Study. Candidates will pursue their course of study for two full academic years, and must satisfactorily complete a programme of 120 credit hours of advanced course work and research under the direction of their department. Following is the layout of the curriculum:

    7-9 courses in one's major, including term papers 38 credits
    Thesis 74 credits
    2 courses of elective study 8 credits
       TOTAL 120 credits

  • Miminum requirements . The miminum requirements for the M.Th. degree are
    • Passing of all courses;
    • Participation in the research seminar;
    • Completion of the thesis with a pass mark.
  • Extensions. Candidates must present their theses within the two year period of study unless granteed an extension by the College Academic Board.
