B.A. Languages for Academic & Professional Skills
(Kiswahili, English, French)
Programme Courses Faculty
Languages Programme
The languages will be taught in their own right as languages, with skills to be mastered. But once mastered, the teaching (especially in the final years) will be geared more towards specific trades or careers that are required in the field (i.e., in real life situation) such as in skills required by translators, travel agents, proof readers, lexicographers, curriculum developers, teachers, and so on.
Arrangements will be made for students in the FHSS to visit such professionals at their work places (e.g., at the Arusha International Conference Centre's sessions where simultaneous translations take place). Other possible places of visits would include publishing and printing firms. Professionals will also be asked to come and conduct either seminars or arranged lectures on the MUCo campus. Such reciprocal visits will enrich the practical nature of the otherwise theoretical courses.
The degree programme lasts three years in a two-semester annual
system. The maximum period a student can take to complete
the programme is five years.
DEGREE
AWARD
Following
the successful completion of all the requirements of the programme
at the end of the 3rd year, a Bachelor of Arts (BA) general
degree will be awarded.
Note that FHSS adheres to TU and HEAC Examination Regulations
.

Faculty
Common (Core) Courses (FCC)
All
the FCC courses are compulsory in FHSS and are to be taken
in the first year. However, FCC 105 is not intended for the
computer literate students who, instead, will be required
to register for FCC 106.
FCC
100: Basic English Communication and Study Skills
FCC 101: Foundations of Language and Literature
FCC 102: Current Issues in Development Studies
FCC 103: Christian Faith and Life Year Course
FCC 104: Introduction to Research Methodology
FCC 105: Basic Computer Literacy
FCC 106: Applied Computer Skills for Academic Communication
Subject
Courses, Years 1, 2 and 3
- In
addition to the Faculty common courses (outlined above),
students will register for a minimum of 9 credits and a
maximum of 15 credits, for the year, in any two subjects
taken in the first year. The courses under each subject
will be specified under the relevant department.
- At
the moment, however, the Faculty (HSS) does not offer a
single major degree programme (although this will be possible
in the foreseeable future with the introduction of more
departments). Students must therefore register for at least
two subjects - e.g., English and Kiswahili. The combination
of the subjects should be selected from the already existing
three languages, viz, Kiswahili, English and French.
- The
total number of credits for each semester should not exceed
21, and for the year 42.
- No
student shall be allowed to graduate if s/he has not cleared
all the required courses and hour earned at least 120 credits.
