INTRODUCTION
The Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) offered at Tumaini University, Makumira University College, provides a three-year programme which is specifically designed to produce high-quality secondary school teachers specifically trained to teach languages, foreign and domestic to Tanzania, in the areas of Kiswahili, English, and French. The areas of study will cover 52 credit hours divided into the three languages according to the focus of the student. in addition to this, 62 credit hours of education courses, both structured and hands-on experiences, will be required of all students in the programme. Furthermore, computer training will be provided so that all students may become computer skilled. See Courses for specific listing.
The number of secondary schools has doubled in the last six years; the need for qualified Advanced Level teachers has ever been higher. It is the goal of Tumaini University, Makumira, to rise to the challenge and produce teachers who will lead Tanzania into a future that is bright and promising.
Kiswahili is the national language of Tanzania. It will be taught with all the integrity and honour of a unique, powerful force in East Africa. With over 100,000,000 speakers of Kiswahili, Tumaini/Makumira is proud to offer it as the major language in the curriculum. Other languages are also offered, especially English, the language of secondary and tertiary education in Tanzania and the major economic language in the world. French is offered because of Tanzania’s trade and international relations with her francophone neighbours to Tanzania. Other languages will be added as demand grows.
As the Tanzania’s Ministry of Education is rightfully concerned of the lack of qualified teachers to meet the needs of the immediate and long-range future, so Tumaini/Makumira will provide professional teachers by combining academic and theoretical knowledge with active participation of students in classroom settings. Students enrolled in this programme will see, model, and practise the newest approaches of education.
Again, Tumaini University, Makumira University College, has developed this Bachelor of Education programme to provide teachers with the specialized knowledge, teaching skills, and practical application in order to improve the educational standards of Tanzania.
As it is common practice in dynamic programmes, the B.Ed Programme at MUCo will, within a year or two, be subject to review in order to update it, and, as the need arises, even add new courses, through the relevant TU/MUCo and national boards.
